Mitchelsto­wn CBS narrowly miss out on Munster final

MITCHELSTO­WN missed out on a place in the Munster Schools U-16.5 Hurling Championsh­ip final after losing narrowly to Ennistymon CBS at UL Limerick on Friday. Mitchelsto­wn got off to a very good start. They had a goal in the second minute when Conor Kent and Darragh O’Brien worked very well for Luke Keating who goaled.

The Clare side replied with rapid points by Josh Quigley (free) McDarra O’Keeffe and Diarmuid Fahy as the sides were level. Josh Quigley edged the winners ahead from a free and he pointed from play soon after when put through by Richard Wynne.

Good play by Darragh O’Brien led to a fine point by Luke Keating. Mark Callanan worked well for Josh Quigley who made it 0-6 to 1-1. In the 12th minute a foul on Evan Hickey led to a pointed free by Luke Keating. Darragh O’Brien placed Dylan Sheehan who pointed.

Mitchelsto­wn levelled in the 19th minute when Mark Walsh placed Evan Hickey for a good point 0-7 to 1-4. Dylan Sheehan edged Mitchelsto­wn in front with Evan Hickey working well for Luke Keating who opened up a lead 1-6 to 0-7. Shane Looney placed Luke Keating for a point. A foul on Diarmuid Fahy led to another pointed free by Josh Quigley. Darragh O’Brien and Josh Quigley (free) swopped a late point as Mitchelsto­wn held an interval lead 1-8 to 0-9.

Padraigh Harrington came close to a goal on the resumption. His effort from close range was saved by the keeper with the rebound going over.

Mitchelsto­wn’s Luke Keating was denied by the post. A long range free by Dylan McCoy found Josh Quigley who cut through the centre but was intercepte­d by Jamie Fogarty denying a certain goal. Josh Quigley pointed a ‘65’. Luke Keating replied from a free as Mitchelsto­wn led 1-10 to 0-10.

Mitchelsto­wn moved four points clear by the 50th minute. Impressive Josh Quigley landed a pointed free. In the 52nd minute Quigley placed Diarmuid Fahy who netted and levelled at 1-11 each. They were also deadlocked at 1-12 each. Three rapid points by Josh Quigley opened up a lead 1-15 to 1-12. Good play by Richard Wynne led to another Quigley point. Mitchelsto­wn CBS battled to the end. They had a pointed free by Luke

Keating. In injury time they forced a close in free needing a goal to force extra time. The free by Dylan Sheehan went narrowly over the bar and the final whistle followed with Ennistymon close winners by a two point margin.
