- BY PAT RYAN

Glanmire 4-16 Mallow 4-8

THE number of red cards doled out in this County MFC final almost equalled the amount of goals scored, which wouldn’t necessarily be notable only that eight goals were scored in a game that saw Mallow lose out to Glanmire.

In a contest that couldn’t be described as dirty, nevertheless seven players were sent off in a match that saw Glanmire win their first ever County MFC title last Friday in Pairc Ui Rinn.

Most of the sendings off occured deep in injury time when three Mallow players and Glanmire player and a Glanmire substitute who came in off the bench were dismissed when a fairly serious row broke out.

Earlier in the second half each team had a player red carded

Mallow hit the ground running with Charlie Carroll opening the scoring with an early point following good play by Michael Fitzpatrtick, Eoin Kelleher and Aidan Bolster. They followed with a goal in the third minute when Aidan Bolster and Eoin Kelleher were again involved in placing Charlie Carroll for a well taken goal.

Glanmire opened their account in the fifth minute when a quick free by Daniel Hogan found Cathal McCarthy who pointed. Mallow came close to a second goal when Daniel Sheehan worked well with Sean McDonnell only to be denied by a great save by Rory Barry with the rebound going out for a ‘45’ that Jamie O’Keeffe converted. Further Mallow pressure yielded a point by Charlie Carroll. In the eighth minute Richard Lombard worked well for Charlie Carroll who was again denied by the Glanmire keeper Rory Barry.

At the other end Cathal McCarthy worked well with Tommy Lonergan who was denied by Mallow keeper Thomas Hickey with the rebound going out for a ‘45’. The ‘45 by Daniel Hogan was kicked over by Brian Lagrue.

Good play for Glanmire led to a fine point by Tommy Lonergan.

Mallow had their second goal by Sean McDermott as they moved 2-3 to 0-3 clear after 15 minutes. Glanmire had a point by Daniel Hogan with the Avondhu side regaining the two-goal lead when Sean McDermott pointed. In the 18th minute Brian Lagrue placed Cathal McCarthy for a goal.

A minute later Cian O’Donovan soloed through and placed Ollie Compton for an equalising goal 2-4 each. The momentum was with Glanmire at this stage. They took the lead when Cathal McCarthy pointed and Olan Kelleher followed with a point after a three-man attack 2-6 to 2-4. By the 25th minute both sides had just one wide each. Mallow failed to score in the second quarter. At the break Glanmire led 2-6 to 2-4.

Glanmire dominated the exchanges on the resumption. James Crowley pointed a free and Cathal McCarthy who was named ‘man of the match’ followed with a great point. Glanmire had 6 points on the trot that showed their dominance. Mallow came close to a goal when Sean McDermott put

Charlie Carroll through but his effort went narrowly wide Cathal McCarthy added another point.

The Imokilly side had their third goal when Cathal McCarthy and Ollie Compton worked well for Daniel Hogan who netted 3-9 to 2-4. Tommy Lonergan soloed through and added another point as the winners moved 3-10 to 2-4 clear. Both sides had a player sent off.

Mallow’s first score in the second half came in the 42nd minute their first in 27 minutes by Eoin Kelleher. Cian O’Donovan replied for the winners. Mallow had a goal in the 46th minute by Luke McCarthy after good play by Richard Lombard as the lead was down to 6 points 3-11 to 3-5.

McCarthy followed with a Mallow point. Mallow battled very hard, they found the Glanmire defence very solid. James Crowley pointed another free 3-12 to 3-6. Daniel Sheehan soloed up field and kicked a massive Mallow point. Mallow got back within 4 points but it was Glanmire who tagged on points by Cathal McCarthy and James Crowley that moved 3-14 to 3-8 ahead by the 58th minute. Daniel Hogan placed Cathal McCarthy for another fine point with James Crowley making it 3-16 to 3-8 by the end of normal time. In the 62nd minute a Mallow free was finished to the net by Richard Lombard before that row broke out and those five red cards were issued.

When order was restored Tommy Lonergan goaled for Glanmire who ran out victors by an eight-point margin.
