Cork girls help Munster to Interprovincial handball title
The curtain came down on the 2019 60x30 Softball programme last weekend with the playing of Boys Inter-county team championship finals at Tipperary venue Ballina on Saturday and Girls Inter-provincial team final at Broadford on Sunday.
On Saturday at Ballina Boys Inter-county Team Championships were decided In Under 12/13 Mallow Credit Union sponsored Cork team faced Kilkenny in the Final with the much stronger Kilkenny panel having a comfortable win over Cork. The Cork team on duty was Ryan Linehan, Thomas Myers, Wesley Delany, John Murphy, Cian Dunning, Tomas O’Connor, Diarmuid O’Connell.
Moving on to Sunday at Broadford Girls inter-provincial team competition was decided with Munster facing a strong Leinster outfit, A good performance on the day from Munster gave then the spoils on a score of 84 aces to 61, Munster opened well as Carmel Kelleher, Boherbue partnering Christine Percy,Tipperary won both their games on a score of 15-6, 15-8.
In the second game Cork pair Sarah Walsh, Mallow, partnered by Cliona Dunning, Conna, won some crucial aces winning the first game 15-13, and losing the second 15-9 to give Munster a lead of six aces going into the last doubles. Clare pair Chloe Philpott and Leah Minogue quashed any chance of a Leinster comeback winning both their games 15-8, 15-5 to secure a Munster victory on a score of 84 aces to 61, Leah O’Riordan, Ballydesmond, was also a member of Munster panel.
In the Munster 40x20 adult club championship good progress has been made to date with all grades narrowed down significantly narrowed down, that progress will continue during the coming week.
In Open grade the Final goes ahead in Ballydesmond on Friday at 7.30pm with Mallow facing Kerry champions Glenbeigh. In Junior grade one semi-final involving Friary Abbeysdie, Dungarvan, and Clare champions Clooney went ahead last evening (Wednesday) at Cashel venue, the second semi final is the clash of Kilworth with Limerick champions Broadford that goes ahead in Mallow this Friday at 7.30pm. In Junior B both semi-finals are down for decision this Saturday, November 2 both with a 3pm start.
At Galbally venue Clare side, Newmarket-on-Fergus take on Liscarroll while at Boherbue venue it will be an all Cork clash as
Mallow take on Ballydesmond. Dates and venues for both Junior B and Junior Finals will be issued once Final pairings are known, but it is expected the championship will be completed by the end of next week.
The Cork Open Juvenile League continues during the coming week in Under 12 to Under 17 Singles with a sizeable number of games down for decision this weekend. The plan is to narrow down each age group to the last four as soon as is possible.
