KANTURK LINK ROAD SET FOR SPRING START

- SHEILA FITZGERALD

IT was a nostalgic trip down memory lane for former pupils of Convent of Mercy Secondary School, Kanturk, when they held a reunion at the Gleneagle Hotel, Killarney recently.

Nineteen women from the 1962 First Year class enjoyed a wonderful meal and a great catch up as they exchanged life stories spanning over 50 years. Past pupils from around the Kanturk area, as well as Newmarket, Freemount, Kilcorney, Nadd, Banteer, Castlemagner and Lombardstown, Kildare and Ennis attended, while one lady travelled from Chicago to mark the occasion.

Mary Corkery, Mary Crowley and Catherine O’Sullivan were the key players in organising the get together. “We thought of organising the reunion this year because we are all in our 70s” Mary Corkery told the Corkman. “While we had a reunion of our Leaving Cert Class around ten years ago, we thought it would be better to get in touch with our First Year classmates this time” she said.

While there were 35 pupils initially in the Class, three are deceased, and with some on holiday or ill, ultimately 19 turned up on the night. “We were able to make contact with everyone except for one girl who’s Father worked in the Bank and the family moved away years ago” Mary explained.

While several of the women live locally and meet up from time to time, many had not seen each other since leaving school. “It was brilliant, we had so much to talk about, it was lovely to see everyone, and we exchanged phone numbers and email addresses so that we can keep in touch and meet up again in the near future” Mary said.
