- BILL BROWNE

THE festive season will officially kick-off in Mallow on Saturday week (November 3), with a large crowd of revellers set to once again descend on the town for the switching on of the Christmas lights and the arrival of Santa.

Mallow Chamber has been busy putting together an exciting line-up of events for the day, beginning at 12.30pm with a choral performance of Christmas carols and seasonal ditties outside the former Town Hall building.

From 1pm giant puppets and Santa’s elves will be around town, mingling with visitors and shoppers and handing out goody bags to the little ones ahead of the arrival of Santa.

The big man himself will arrive at the

Market Place in a fire engine at around 3pm and after meeting and greeting kiddies will lead a parade down to the Town Plaza at the bottom of Davis Street.

On his arrival the assembled crowd will be treated to a selection of rock infused Christmas classics by local band Longbeach.

Finally, the lights will be switched on by new Chamber president Sharon Cregg and special guests from the Cope Foundation.

Sharon urged families to come along, enjoy the community spirit and help kickoff Christmas in Mallow with a bang.

“The occasion will also give people an opportunity to see all that the town has to offer for Christmas shoppers and we in the Chamber are hoping that people will shop local and support the local traders,” said Mr Hayes.

“Above all, it will be about having fun so come along, enjoy the craic and who knows, maybe even pick up a Christmas bargain or two,” she added.

Meanwhile, Cork County Council has unveiled details of revised parking arrangements in Mallow over the festive period from December 1 to January 2.

There will be one-hour free ‘on-street’ parking and three-hours free parking in the council car parks at St James’ Avenue, Carmichael Lane, Park Road, Bridge Street, Bowling Green and Muddy Hill and Spa Road.

The current arrangements of free parking before 10am and after 5pm (Monday – Friday) will remain in place and the free parking (with time restrictions) from 1pm on Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday will also be unchanged.
