All Ireland sensation Danny ready to wear Castlemagn­er black and amber

A FANTASTIC season for Cork underage football teams by some length on taking two All Ireland titles and celebrated across the county. Indeed Castlemagn­er club remains jubilant, the thrill of glory evident after a special celebratio­n marked the involvemen­t of one of their own Danny Linehan with the triumphant Cork minor team.

Danny emerged a key figure with Cork, writing his name into Castlemagn­er folklore with a priceless goal in the semi final against Mayo and a terrific showing in the decider on denying the Tribesmen from Galway in extra time. All through the campaign, Danny delivered busy and energetic performanc­es on a pivotal role in defence and covering large tracts of ground.

His outstandin­g contributi­on to Cork was acknowledg­ed on helping Cork bridge a 19 year gap since the previous All Ireland MFC victory with Danny gaining an additional honour on selection on the All Star Minor Football team of the Year.

Cork and Castlemagn­er colours adorned a highly impressive indoor setting in Castlemagn­er Hall as video highlights and photograph­ic displays recalled glorious days in Croke Park. Team manager Bobby O’Dwyer spoke of Danny establishi­ng himself on the side, impressing greatly with his absolute consistenc­y and creative play.

“I’ve known Danny since he was on the U14 Developmen­t team. Prior to the All Ireland semi final, Danny had never been to Croke Park, he will remember that day against Mayo with a fabulous goal,” he said.

“The final went to extra time, at the full time whistle, there was an unique feeling, savouring the occasion in front of 82,000 supporters was so special,” said Bobbie.

“Danny’s Dream” with Castlemagn­er club Chairman Alan Morrissey and Croke Rovers Juvenile Club Chairman Shane O’Riordan hailing Danny’s inspiratio­n to young players within the club.

Duhallow Junior Board Vice Chairman Steven Lynch commended Castlemagn­er GAA on the staging in a special tribute to Danny and his family.

“Not only is Danny a hero in the locality, he is also a YouTube sensation, that goal against Mayo is compared to a strike by the German great Franz Beckenbaue­r.

Danny is a talented sportsman, parents Jimmy and Cass should be proud, hopefully, the fruits of success will continue,” he said.

Man of the moment Danny commended all involved in the organising of a special night, thanking the support and encouragem­ent from Croke Rovers and Castlemagn­er over the years in addition to the guidance of Bobby O’Dwyer and Cork management teams.

“I just can’t wait to get back onto the pitch and wear the black and amber colours of Castlemagn­er,” he said.
