EPS wins contract for four new wastewater treatment plants

- BILL BROWNE

THE multi-award winning Mallow-based international water solutions giant EPS Group has added yet another string to its already impressive bow - securing the contract to deliver four new Cork wastewater treatment plants.

The company, which last year celebrated its 50th year in business, is a global leader in the field of ‘wet’ infrastructure with support service operations across Ireland, the UK, the Middle East and West Africa.

The EPS Group already has a significant footprint in Cork, with the company already working Regional Water Supply Scheme in Skibbereen and upgrading of the Bandon and Millstreet wastewater treatment plants.

The latest project, will see the company deliver new plants in Coachford, Dripsey, Ballyvourney/ Ballymakeera and Innishannon, under a €27million package announced by Irish Water in partnership with Cork County Council.

Seamus Glynn, regional infrastructure lead with Irish Water said the existing wastewater infrastructure in these areas, which service thousands of home and businesses was “overloaded and outdated”.

“Wastewater treatment is mainly by septic tank in these villages at present and this technology is outdated and not meeting the required standards. This project will deliver new plants in each of the four areas, as well as the additional associated infrastructure required to connect the new plants into existing infrastructure in each village,” said Mr Glynn.

“On completion, the new infrastructure will end the discharge of poorly treated effluent and improve water quality in the receiving waters in each area. Once operational, the new plants will ensure compliance with wastewater discharge regulations.”

It is anticipated that construction work at all four sites will commence in the New Year and be completed in mid 2021. Mr Glynn said that Irish Water and the EPS Group will be in contact with the local communities during the course of the works.

“All new infrastructure is sized to accommodate future population growth of each village and surrounding areas. These projects will enhance the local environment and provide a platform for social and economic development of each area well into the future,” said Mr Glynn.

An information evening detailing of the Coachford and Dripsey elements of the project will take place at Coachford National School from 6pm – 7.30pm on Monday, December 9.

EPS Group managing director Patrick Buckley said the company was delighted to be working on the multi-million Euro project.

“This 24 month contract will not only improve the water infrastructure for a number of Mid- Cork area areas in Mid Cork, but will also boost local employment and facilitate future development plans,” said Mr Buckley.
