Whitechurch deny Kilara Óg MBHL title

- BY PAT RYAN

Whitechurch 4-11 Kilara Og 1-9

AN impressive display by Whitechurch saw them run out convincing winners over Kilara Og in this years Rebel Og County MBHL final at the 4G Pitch at Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Friday night.

Despite the sides being tied for the second time at 0-2 each by the 5th minute it was the winners who had some outstanding displays all through by Nathan Sweeney, Mark Callanan, Rory O’Connell, Micheal Mullins, James McGrath, Cillian Egan, Ronan Blake and Ronan Murphy that prevailed from here.

Patrick McGrath and Ronan Murphy added points before they struck for the first of their four goals in the 17th minute when Daniel Kelleher finished to the net.

Two minutes later they increased their lead to 2-5 to 0-2 when a delivery by Micheal Mullins set up Ronan Murphy for a well taken goal. Further pressure by the Seandun outfit saw them breach the Kilara Og backline for a third goal in the 23rd minute when a good clearance by corner back Callum Kelleher found James McGrath who set up Ronan Murphy for a cracking goal.

In injury time the hugely impressive Mark Callanan completed the first half scoring for the winners as they held a 3-8 to 0-2 interval lead.

On the changeover Kilara Og (Kilworth/Araglin) came out a much improved side but in truth they were too far behind to get back into contention. They had some good performances by Michael Gowen, Luke Carey, Diarmuid Allen, Michael Sheehan and substitute Mark Carey.

The Avondhu side reeled off four points by the 39th minute to come within 3-9 to 0-6. Moments later Whitechurch sealed victory when one of their key players Micheal Mullins scored his side’s fourth goal. Kilara Og refused to give in.

In the 48th minute Brian Casey had their goal after receiving a good pass from Jake Buckley. The last ten minutes saw both teams add two points each by Michael Sheehan (2) Ronan Murphy and Brian O’Reilly as Whitechurch ran out comfortable winners.

After the game Donal Whooley Secretary of the Rebel Og Board presented the cup to victorious captain Nathan Sweeney.
