County 40x20 championsh­ips now drawing to a conclusion

ANOTHER busy week beckons in handball as the county 40x20 adult championsh­ip progresses. A lot of progress has been made in recent weeks but some crucial fixtures for some players now await as the business end of most grades are reached.

In Junior Mixed Grade Singles the final now rests between Kilworth’s John Horgan and Dale Cusack from Mallow, with that finally likely to have been played in past few days. In Junior B Singles

Gearoid O’Connell, Mallow, is county champion and goes ahead to represent the county in Munster championsh­ip as Cork 1. Shane Flynn, Boherbue, was runner-up with a likely play-off for Cork 2 spot pending there.

In Junior B Doubles at one side of draw its down to semi-final that game goes ahead in Boherbue on Saturday, December 7 at 7pm with Mallow pair Anthony O’Connell/Gearoid O’Connell to play Liscarroll pair Colin Healy/Michael O’Callaghan.

At the other side of the draw Kilworth pair Oisin Hickey/Tim Dunne are through to semi final they defeated Conna pair Ian Heffernan/Pa Roche in quarter-final. The remaining quarter-final is down for decision this Thursday in Mallow at 7.30 with Conna pair Brian Sheehan/Dave Twomey taking on Shane Flynn, Boherbue partnered by John Bosco Hurley, Liscarroll.

In Masters B Singles which was decided the past week Paul Walsh, Mallow was crowned County champion defeating Enda Aherne, Boherbue.

The play-off for Cork No.2 in Masters B Singles now rests between Boherbue clubmates Enda Aherne and Roger Casey that play goes ahead in Boherbue on Tuesday 10 at 7pm. In Masters B Doubles Paul Walsh, Mallow, partnering Michael Linehan, Ballydesmo­nd are in a semi-final in which they await the winner of the Glenville v Conna clash. The second semi-final is down for decision this Thursday in Mallow at 8pm with Boherbue pair Roger Casey/ Enda Aherne taking on Conna Brian Sheehan/Dino Pietrapaol­o.

In Diamond Masters B singles John Lyons, Macroom, has qualified for the final defeating Thado Healy, Ballydesmo­nd, the second semi-final was played last evening (Wednesday) with Dave Stack,

Ballydesmo­nd taking on Noel Carty, Macroom.

On Sunday last at Clare venues Tulla and Clooney Munster Primary Schools Team competitio­ns were played off. Cork had a team in both A and B Sections. In A Section Cork lost to Tipperary in a semi-final with Clare going on to defeat Tipperary in the Final The Cork A team Ryan Linehan, Wesley Delany, John Murphy, Gearoid Sheehan, Thomas Myers, Amy Brosnan. Jack Murphy, Billy Aherne.

In B competitio­ns Cork defeated Tipperary in semi final but lost the Final to Clare.The Cork team on duty Fionn McGready, Paddy Murphy, Adam Carroll, Bobby Vaughan, Eoghan Riordan, Julian Pietropaol­o, Ciaran Aherne, Eoghan Aherne.

In the GAA Handball All Star Awards 2019 Catriona Casey Ballydesmo­nd has been honoured with Ladies Handball All Star Award in recognitio­n of an outstandin­g season, achieving many major successes both in Irish Handball and in the US, among her major achievemen­ts was winning 40x20 Ladies Senior Singles & Doubles and in 60x30 Ladies Senior Doubles All-Ireland titles an award which richly deserved.
