Jobs boost for Kanturk with new Aldi store on the way
PREMISES PROPOSED ON SITE OF FORMER KEATING’S BAKERY PENCILLED IN TO OPEN BY 2022 - SUBJECT TO PLANNING PERMISSION
GERMAN discount giant has said that its proposed new premises in Kanturk will create up to 80 jobs during construction and a further 20 full-time roles once the store opens its doors.
Shortly before the end of last year Aldi lodged an application with Cork County Council, seeking permission to redevelop the former Keating’s Bakery site on Percival Street.
The application makes provision for the demolition of existing structures on the site that has laid idle since the bakery, which had been operating in the town since the early part of the last century, closed its doors in 2006 with the loss of almost 100 jobs.
The site, which has become something of an eyesore, will accommodate a single story retail outlet with a gross floor area of 1,785 sq metres, leading bay and an 84 space car park.
The application makes further provision for a new vehicular entrance from the existing laneway off Percival Street, a new pedestrian walkway from the street and a planned new pedestrian entrance connecting directly to the proposed new Kanturk relief/link road.
Submissions/observations in relation to the proposed development must be lodged with council planners by Monday, February 3, with a decision due on or before Monday, February 24.
Aldi’s Mitchelstown region managing director, Adam Ward, said that it is hoped the Kanturk store would be opened in April, 2022.
“The store, which will be powered by 100 per cent green electricity, is part of a €160 million investment in our network of Irish stores. It is anticipated that up to 80 jobs will be created during construction, with 20 further roles created once the store is open,” said Mr Ward.
“We are absolutely thrilled to be coming to Kanturk. This is fantastic news for shoppers and employment in the town.
Aldi has a strong commitment to Cork, having first opened our doors in Ballincollig in 1999. Currently operating 23 stores in Cork, in addition to our Regional Distribution Centre located in Mitchelstown and we are excited to be adding Kanturk to this list,” he added.
