The Corkman

Camogie team should shine under lights

-

BEFORE the Cork hurlers get their 2020 home league campaign off and running there is the not insignificant matter of the National Camogie League encounter between Cork and Waterford to whet the appetite in Pairc Uí Chaoimh at 5pm.

The Cork men fell at the first hurdle to Waterford last weekend so this Saturday the women will be out to make sure that they don’t suffer the same fate and get their season off to a more solid and positive start.

After winning the All Ireland crown in 2017 and 2018 the Cork ladies came up short last season when many thought they were destined for three in a row so this year all eyes, both internally and externally, will be on the camp as they look to start their season well and push on to bigger and better things.

At the time of going to print there was no team named for this weekend however it is likely that there will be a fresh, youthful side taking to the field for Cork with a few legends thrown in for good measure.

Waterford will bring the best side they have available to the banks of the Lee as they look to scupper Cork’s chances and enhance their own of doing something in this season’s league.

Waterford will look to improve on the three losses they suffered in the league in 2019 with only one win to take solace from however this game under lights is hardly going to be their easiest test of the year as Cork go in search of that winning feeling that they will hope is a sign of things to come.

Cork made it to the final last season but failed to see off a Kilkenny side that had their measure on the day.

Prediction: It’s a big night for all concerned as the floodlights beam down on the new playing surface at headquarters, but Cork are the ones that need to get off the mark and it would be a serious shock if they didn’t manage that in front of their home fans.

Cork by six points or more.
