KANTURK RISE TO ACADEMY CHALLENGE TO REACH FINAL

Colaiste Treasa Kanturk 2-25 Patrician Academy Mallow 3-17

THIS Munster Senior C HC semi-final at Ballyhea on Saturday was a thriller all through. Brian O’Sullivan at midfield for the winners was in splendid form taking some massive scores.

The teams were level on seven occasions including at full time. Colin Walsh had two points for Kanturk by the third minute. Academy battled back well. Good play by Charlie Carroll led to an early Daniel Sheehan point. The sides were level after seven minutes when Jamie Magnier pointed a free 0-2 each. Kanturk hit the front by Tommy Walsh and when Brian O’Sullivan pointed from long range they were 0-4 to 0-2 ahead.

Academy battled back well. Eoin Kelleher had a very good point with Conor Corbett and Kelleher working well for Charlie Carroll who levelled at 0-4 each after 12 minutes play. A well taken sideline cut by Colin Walsh was gathered by Brian O’Sullivan who sent over. Alan Walsh followed with a free. A very good point by Brandon Murphy opened up a three-point lead for Colaiste Treasa. Magnier (free) and Callum O’Shaughness­y swapped a point.

Academy had a goal in the 2lst minute when David Walsh and Colm Looney worked well for Daniel Sheehan who goaled from close range. The Mallow side had three wides with Brian O’Sullivan with a long range point edging Kanturk 0-9 to 1-5 clear. Colaiste Treasa hit a purple patch and three quick-fire points made it 0-12 to 1-5 by the 27th minute. Academy finished the half well. They had three points in the closing moments by Magnier (frees) and Corbett to be right back in the game at the break just a point adrift 0-12 to 1- 8.

On the resumption a foul on Daniel Sheehan led to an equalising pointed free by Magnier. Both sides had a few wides. Good play by David Walsh led to a great Daniel Sheehan point. Kanturk forced level when Rory Sheahan worked well for Colin Walsh 1-10 to 0-13.

Academy were off target on two occasions. A foul on Barry O’Shea led to a lead pointed free by Magnier. The Academy moved two clear entering the final quarter when Kelleher placed David Walsh for a point. Kanturk kept in touch when Brian O’Sullivan pointed a free. In the 5lst minute impressive Niall O’Riordan pointed a long range free 1-13 to 0-14.

O’Sullivan with a massive point from deep in the half back line cut the lead to a single point 1-14 to 0-16. In the 53rd minute Hugh O’Connor goaled for Kanturk after good play by lan Walsh. They followed with a point by Brian O’Sullivan 2-14 to 1-17.

With five minutes remaining Mallow had a goal by Barry

O’Shea after good play by Colm Looney. Kanturk replied with a point a minute later by Tommy Walsh. Entering injury time Mallow hit the front when Colm Looney placed Daniel Sheehan for a point. Good play by Conor Sheahan led to another fine point by Brian O’Sullivan 1-18 to 2-15 at full time.

Extra time was played and it was Mallow who had their second goal by Magnier after good play by Charlie Carroll. Brian O’Sullivan (free) and Colm Looney swapped a point. At half time in extra time Mallow led 3- 17 to 1-21.

On the changeover it was all Kanturk. A foul on Rory Sheahan led to an early pointed free by Brian O’Sullivan. O’Sullivan followed with a goal from a long range free and some well taken points as Colaiste Treasa advanced to a final meeting with Scoil Pol Kilfinane by a fivepoint margin.
