Green theme for Mallow St Patrick’s Day parade

- EUGENE COSGROVE

WITH just six weeks to go to St Patrick’s Day, the Mallow Parade Committee officially announced some of their plans this week.

Over the last number of years Mallow has been in festive mood on Saint Patrick’s Day when the annual parade proceeds down Davis Street with much colour and spectacle. As a result of much campaigning in the local media against the lack of a Patrick’s Day Parade in Mallow, Mrs Hanna Sheehan, Mary O’Brien and the late Tommy Conroy took up the challenge to organise a parade and formed the first parade committee in Mallow; and that was all of 32 years ago.

Green Theme is the subject of this year’s parade in Mallow. It is the organisers’ wish that we in Mallow on March 17 this year will celebrate sustainability. So the organisers are asking that, whether you are a Sports Team, a local business or a school, that you come out on the day and showcase your talents and achievements to all along Davis Street in Mallow.

It is only fitting that the theme is a green one for this year as the community continues locally to develop a strong community spirit, while at the same time making strides to provide a better infrastructure so as to make this community spirit a reality in an era where children are learning so much about their environment and protecting striving to protect it for their future.

The parade assembles in Mallow Town Park from 1.30pm with the start time of the parade at 2.30pm. On stage, outside St Mary’s Church, from 1.45pm onwards, on Davis Street / Main Street, Cuisle Avondhu will provide pre-parade entertainment.

Intending participants in this year’s parade in Mallow should make contact with either Mairie Ui Bhriain in the Naoinaire in the Mallow GAA Complex, or with Noel O’Connor at 087 273 8222.
