Twocharged­afterdrugs worth€80,000seized

TWO Latvians have been remanded in custody after they were charged with drug offences following a garda investigat­ion which uncovered consignmen­ts of cannabis totalling €80,000 in North Cork and Dublin.

Fermoy detectives found two kilos of cannabis herb worth €20,000 when they stopped a car on the M8 near Mitchelsto­wn and in a follow up search Gardai found further drugs at house in Hollytown in Dublin.

Two men arrested by gardai in North Cork were brought before a special sitting of Cork District Court on Saturday where one man was charged in relation to the €20,000 seizure and the other charged in respect of drugs worth €80,000.

Aleksandrs Landzars (27) of Patricksto­wn,

Ballinloug­h, Kells, Co Meath was charged with possession of cannabis and possession of €20,000 worth of cannabis for sale or supply at Kilshanny, Mitchelsto­wn, on January 30th.

And Juris Savcuks (38) of Chapelton, Hollystown, Dublin 15, was also charged with possession of cannabis and possession of €20,000 worth of cannabis for sale or supply at Kilshanny, Mitchelsto­wn on January 30th.

Mr Savcuks was also charged with a further two drug offences of possession of cannabis and possession of €60,000 of cannabis for sale or supply at Chapelton, Hollytown, Dublin 15 on January 31st

Det Garda Noel Howley gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution in relation to both accused and told the court that neither man made any reply to any of the charges when they put to them after caution

Insp Gary McPolin said that gardai were objecting to bail and he sought a remand in custody but defence solicitor Daithi O Donnabhain applied for bail in respect of both accused.

Following submission­s from both Insp McPolin and Mr O’Donnabhain, Judge Mary Dorgan refused bail and remanded both accused in custody on the Cork charges to appear at Midleton District Court on February 6th.

Judge Dorgan also refused Mr Savcuks bail on the Dublin charges and she remanded him in custody to appear on those charges at Blanchards­town District Court on February 4th
