A BUMPER turnout for a Friday night table quiz led to a fundraising effort which far exceeded the target originally set by Banteer woman Sarah Weathers

Sarah is raising funds for the Neurosurgical Unit in Beaumont Hospital as it was there she received life saving treatment when doctors discovered a benign tumour which affected her brain and spine almost three years ago.

Back then Sarah was in the middle of her Leaving Cert studies and since then she’s been in and out of hospital and was gravely ill last September.

Now she’s working in Waterpower in Kanturk and hoping to resume her Business Studies course in UL in the near future but she also set herself the target of raising €5000 for the unit which saved her life in Beaumont Hospital.

“In 2019 I had a shunt inserted to drain fluid from the brain and in September I spent a very scary three week stay in Beaumont hospital fighting for my life.

“Really and truly I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for the amazing staff and my wonderful team of doctors in Beaumont hospital,” she said.

Her go fund me page (www. gofundme.com/neurologist-sectionis doing well with pledges of over €4000 and the event on Friday night in the White Country Inn in Banteer garnered over €7500 which, together with other donations, brings the overall total to more than €13,000.

Sarah and her mother, Mary, were blown away by the support shown by their friends and neighbours at Friday’s event.

While there were 44 tables set out on the night, some of the tables had eight to ten participants and seats were at a premium.

It’s now intended to carry on with the fundraising effort until February 19 when Sarah will be in Dublin to present the proceeds to the neurosurgical unit at Beaumont hospital.
