Making magic through the lens

- BILL BROWNE

FOLLOWING on what had been yet another productive for Mallow Camera Club, the winner of their hotly contested 2019 ‘Image of the Year’ competition has been unveiled.

Club PRO Jim McSweeney said that once again the standard of entry was very high, giving competition judges, highly-distinguished photographers Niall Brownen (AIPF EFIAP) and John Finn (ARPS), a tough job in picking the category winners.

“The bar was set very high, with a lot of fabulous entries submitted. This was a fantastic reflection on not just the winners but also on the sheer depth of talent that exists within the club across all levels from beginners to our more experienced members,” said Mr McSweeney.

“We thank John and Niall for taking the time to judge the competition and providing definitive commentary, including suggestions for improvement where appropriate, on all the images, which was highly appreciated by all the contestants. Congratulations to all the winners and thank you and better luck next time to every one else who entered the competition,” he added.

As in previous years the competition was divided into three categories: colour print, mono print and projected image, over four gradings (one being the less experienced through to four for advanced members).

Both John Finn and Niall Brownen said they were impressed the standard of entry, in particularly with some of the portraits, which John said “exhibited a sensibility often lacking in camera club photography.”

“It is little wonder therefore that Mallow Camera Club is one of Ireland’s premier clubs,” he said.

Niall was also impressed with the attention to detail: “It made judging of the images an absolute joy, whilst being extremely difficult to choose an outright winner at each level,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mallow Camera Club will launch permanent exhibition of some of their work at Mount Alvernia Hospital on Friday, February 14.
