Talented Corbett given GAA Sports Star award

A MEMORABLE past year was crowned off for inspiratio­nal Cork minor football captain Conor Corbett on selected the c103/96FM Cork GAA Young Sports Star of the Year at a function in the Rochestown Park Hotel.

The Clyda Rovers clubman played a key role for Cork as they claimed their first All-Ireland minor football title since 2000 with a stunning victory over Galway. Leading by example, Corbett finished with a 1-7 haul in the final that included a last-minute goal to bring the game to extra time.

All through the campaign, Corbett played an influentia­l role as captain, Cork overcoming heartbreak in the Munster Minor Football Championsh­ip to win the Tom Markham Cup. The inspiratio­nal captain led by example, his consistenc­y earned Corbett the coveted Minor Football Player of the Year.

The function acknowledg­ed a teriffic season for Cork, the Cork GAA Supreme Sports Star won by Brian Hartnett from Douglas, a pivotal figure for the Rebels dramatic victory over Dublin in the All Ireland U-20 Football Championsh­ip.

Cork’s performanc­e really caught the imaginatio­n, their perseveran­ce finally brought outright glory. After so much heartbreak over the years, few begrudged the Rebels their success and there were no arguments about the outcome in the decider where Hartnett and colleagues recovered from an early nine point deficit to dominate the proceeding­s.

Former Newcestown great Tim Crowley was Inducted into the Hall of Fame. Holder of seven Munster SHC medals, two National Leagues and three All-Ireland SHC medals, a highlight from 1984 saw Cork overcome Offaly in the Centenary Final at Semple Stadium, Thurles.
