Cathal Ducey goal earns Boherbue dramatic win over Kanturk

-

Boherbue 4-12 Kanturk 3-14

BOHERBUE produced a barnstorming recovery to snatch a dramatic victory over Kanturk in a thrilling Central Stores, Kanturk Duhallow U-21 ‘B’ FC opening round tussle at Glantane. The closing minutes could scarcely had been more dramatic as the pendulum swung back and forth before veering to Boherbue in a tie breaking swing.

A terrific goal from Cathal Ducey determined a memorable encounter to allow Boherbue shade matters by the minimum of margins. Ducey finished with aplomb, taking a perfectly weighed delivery from Fintan O’Connor over the Kanturk rearguard, a point would have levelled the game for extra time only for Ducey to advance further into the scoring zone and finish expertly to the net.

For much of the opening half, Boherbue looked the sharper outfit, taking encouragement from the play of Jack and Patrick Daly along with the effective Ducey and Gerry O’Sullivan. And Boherbue rushed into an early lead from goals netted by Brian Murphy and Alan O’Connor.

Kanturk’s fortunes improved with Gavin Kenehen and Daniel O’Connell bisecting the uprights to trail 2-6 to 0-7 at the break. Again, Boherbue took up the running for the restart, Liam Moynihan finishing to the net.

An understrength Kanturk desperately required a break to stem the flow and it arrived in a productive burst that yielded a 2-4 tally, the goals netted by O’Connell and Colin Walsh. That altered the scoreboard in Kanturk’s favour only for Boherbue answer with points to O’Sullivan and Ducey for a 3-9 to 2-11 advantage.

The excitement rose a notch as the sides traded points before Kanturk pounced for a lead goal by Kenehen. Far from finished Boherbue answered with Ducey’s all important strike to regain the lead.

Kanturk remained very much in the game and a Kenehen white flag left the minimum between the sides. It brought Kanturk within touching distance but not enough to save the day.
