Greta Thunberg regrets she will be unable to speak with Cork County Council on climate issue
But visit by royal couple to Cork is probable, say royal watchers
GLOBALLY acclaimed climateactivist Greta Thunberg has informed Cork County Council that she will be unable to address the local authority either in person or by video link.
The Swedish teenager, who has addressed the United Nations and the recent global economic summit in Davos, Switzerland, has let it be known through a spokesperson that she would be unable to accept the invitation.
This invitation was initially proposed and accepted at a meeting of Cork County Council’s northern area.
This was then ratified at full council level.
The Time Person of the Year for 2019 has an incredibly busy schedule.
She has famously eschewed taking flights to engagements, and crossed the Atlantic on a yacht to attend the UN.
Meanwhile, reports in British newspapers have suggested that Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge will take in Cork during their impending visit to Ireland next month.
Prince William, who is likely to be a future King of England, and his wife, Kate Middleton, announced they would be coming over on a three-day visit to Ireland earlier this week.
In previous visits by British royal figures, Queen Elizabeth has visited Cork’s English Market, while Prince Charles, the next in line to the throne, was in County Kerry.
In the wake of Brexit, which put an extraordinary strain on the relationship between Ireland and Britain, this latest visit is being seen as another move to ensure cordial relations continue between the two countries at a time when tensions are running high.
