Council to go to tender for €3.5m roadworks plan

- BILL BROWNE

WHILE the COVID-19 crisis may have forced Cork County council to restrict its operations, the authority is still carrying on with many of its normal functions behind closed doors.

One instance of these being the fact that tenders have this week been issued for a €3.5million programme of road resurfacing works across the council’s Kanturk/Mallow and Fermoy municipal districts.

The contract makes provision for improvement works at 24 specific sites across the north Cork region, covering more than 12km of road surface. The scope of works will include resurfacing, major reconstruction, traffic-calming measures and drainage works.

It is envisaged that the works will take place between May and October, with details and road closures and diversions announced closer to the start dates of each project.

The Mayor of County Cork, Cllr Ian Doyle, said the tending process was a clear sign that the council is continuing to do business and was preparing to deliver essential infrastructural l projects once the COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted.

Sentiments echoed by Cork County Council chief executive Tim Lucey.

“We continue to serve the needs of our citizens during this period of global uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. This is just one example of where we will be ready to resume our maintenance, improvement and project based programmes of work throughout the county,” he said.
