Davis’ Young Reducers reach national Finals

THE Younger Reducers Climate Action group from Davis College, Mallow have progressed to the finals of the Eco Unesco Environmental Awards competition.

Their initial hope was to reduce the use of plastic in the school and the community. Transition years received training from UNESCO and the local tidy towns on waste reduction and they spoke to all class groups about waste reduction.

Past pupil Demi Issac Oviawe, star of ‘ The Young Offenders’ and current Cork Culture Night Ambassador, lent her support to the project.

We have removed plastic water bottles from the school and now have canned water on sale as well as free water to those who bring their own reusable bottles.

As well as reducing plastics within the school the group also worked with Davis College Model United Nations and supplied free teas and coffees to participants who had reusable cups. Over 500,000 litres of tea/coffees were served in usable cups over the four days.

Well done to all our young environmentally aware students.

HAIKU WINNER

Haiku is a traditional Japanese threeline poem with 17 syllables, written in a 5/7/5 syllable count. Often focusing on images from nature, haiku emphasizes simplicity, intensity, and directness of expression.

First Year David Oskwarek entered and won a national Haiku competition.

HISTORIC PHOTOS

We continue this week with a series of photos. There are two class groups from the 1980s when the school was still based in Annabella. The school has had a long and rich tradition of debating as the 1996 photo of a debating team demonstrated. Included is Mr. O’Sullivan who is still a teacher in the school. Mr. O’Sullivan was also heavily involved in the Co-operation North Programme which was a charity that sought to promote reconciliation between the Protestant and Catholic communities in Northern Ireland and to promote dialogue and understanding between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Finally we have a class group who entered the school in the last year of the century.
