Milestones of Kilshannig

-

KILSHANNIG GAA Club remembered the pioneers of Kilshannig G. A. A who annexed the first ever North Cork Novice F. Championship in 1953 beating Function Vale by 1-3 to 1-2.

They were special guests at the clubs dinner dance at the Isle of Skye Hotel on November 3rd. Present were Con Lynch, Michael O’Donovan,

Con O’Hanlon, Eddie Joe O’Connor, Ned O’Flynn, Dermot McDonnell, Liam Condon, Denis O’Riordan, Tim O’Sullivan, Denis Murphy, Billy Ring, Johnny Flynn, Willie O’Brien, Tom Heffernan, Patsy Mccarthy, Gerard O’Connor, Edser Roche, Joe Healy John Deady together with officials Fr. Cotter cc Chairman, David O’Leary and Con

Murphy. Absent were Frs. David Buckley and Patrick O’Sullivan, John Joe Scanlon R. I. P. and Sean Cremin R. I. P.

This year the Junior Footballers made an unexpected exit from the championship being beaten four points by Mallow. To prove that result a fluke they kept their best display of the past two years for the Fitzgerald Cup final in which they defeated the reigning county champions, Kildorrery, with a last minute goal.

The minor footballers, made up mainly of 15 and 16 year old lads, kept the colours high by reaching the final of a special competition and, in doing so, showed plenty of grit and determination which are the hallmarks of all kilshannig teams.

The Fitzgerald Cup result proves that the County Championshipis within our grasp. The players will have to pay a bit more attention to training especially in the early spring months. Supporters are requested to attend the A. G. M. in the pavilion, Glantane, Saturday January 15th. at 7. 30 pm.

To put the above notes in context the victory in 1953 was a milestone in the club’s history. The parish was represented by a number of teams based around the various village in the parish up to 1945 when a united parish wide G. A. A. Club was formed at a meeting held in Glenogue National School in early spring 1945. The new club was named Kilshannig United and the following officers were elected-: President Canon Cowhey, Vice Presidents Frs. Fitzgerald and Wall, Chairman Don Dennehy, Sec. Pat O’Callaghan, Assistant Sec. Christy Kelleher, Treasurer Fr, Kennedy.
