Council urges the people of Cork to get ‘snap happy’

- BILL BROWNE

AMATEUR snappers across Cork have been encouraged to let their creative juices flow under the auspices of a new photography competition launched by Cork County Council.

Aimed at inspiring people to capture their personal experiences of life under lockdown, the competition encourages people to “embrace their surroundings and take a closer look at the beauty that exists within 5km of their doorsteps.”

One of a number of council initiatives designed to promote well-being under the umbrella of the national ‘In This Together’ campaign, the competition is open to people of all ages across thee separate categories.

They are: ‘Lovely Landscapes and Town Views’, ‘ Animal Shots’ and ‘ Family Fun during COVID-19’, with the collection of images set to become a historical picture archive of daily life in the county during these unprecedented times.

Photo entries can be submitted via YourCouncil.ie, with the weekly category winners having their images featured across council’s social media platforms. In addition they will win tickets to one of the authority’s tourism attractions to be used once the lockdown restrictions have been lifted.

County Mayor Cllr Ian Doyle said competition aims to get people out exercising, connect with their locale and heritage and have fun with family and pets at home.

“This wonderful initiative gives us the chance to come together as a community to celebrate one another and our beautiful county while social distancing is in place. There’s a wealth of talent behind every smart phone and camera and I can’t wait to see what it produces,” he said.
