Camogie ladies support Pieta
MILLSTREET Camogie club really proved their mettle last weekend in support of the charity Pieta House. The latter’s annual Darkness Into Light event which attracts over 250,000 people from all over the world scheduled for last Saturday but unfortunately had to be cancelled because of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
This came as a major financial blow for Pieta as Darkness Into Light is their biggest fundraiser and raises over €6 million each year to ensure that they can continue to support all important services.
However organisations and clubs such as Millstreet Camogie stepped up to help the charity facing an unprecedented funding crisis. The club’s minor and U16 players came up with a roster on a Dawn to Sunrise PuckForPieta fundraiser.
Club spokesperson Deirdre Looney applauded all 30 girls involved in the marathon that lasted from 5.30am to 9.30pm.
“We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone that supported, donated and took the time to take part in their PuckForPieta fundraiser. A little idea that not only made them feel closer together during this lockdown but hopefully the whole club too and all while helping raise funds for such a worthy cause “, said Deirdre.
For the best part, the weather was magnificent before a thunder storm hovered overhead yet by the completion of a satisfying day, Millstreet Camogie club had raised a €2,545 contribution through a GoFundMe page on Facebook, far surpassing what they had expected.
Feedback from Pieta House acknowledged a series of brilliant fundraisers over the weekend, with the charity confirming, despite the funding difficulties, its focus remains on maintaining its service at a time when they have never been needed more owing to the coronavirus.
