North Cork roads approved for €800k upgrade
RESURFACING works will commence in August on roads in the Charleville and Newmarket areas under the North Cork Road Recycling and Surface Dressing 2020 Project.
The process of road recycling involves the mixing of bitumen emulsion and cement with recycled material from the existing road pavement.
This process is suitable for rural roads and can provide substantial environmental benefits including a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, a reduction in carbon footprint, a reduction in the haulage of material and the conservation of natural resources.
County Cork Mayor, Cllr Ian Doyle, welcomed the news saying he was proud that the council were taking ‘innovative and environmentally conscious steps in delivering vital services to our communities’.
“These works will enhance access to towns and villages in the region, while improving the safety of our road network for all road users in North Cork.
“The Road Recycling and Surface Dressing works this year will support other Project ACT initiatives to help us all adapt and thrive in times to come.”
County Council CEO Tim Lucey described the initiative as an important investment and a part of Project ACT, the authority’s post COVID recovery scheme.
“We will continually seek out new ways to improve service delivery and this project is an excellent example, providing necessary road improvements while acknowledging our responsibility to our communities and our environment.”
The work has been contracted to Thomas Murphy & Sons Machinery Ltd.
