Volunteer firefighters take challenge of ‘Never Ending Cycle’ for air ambulance

- JOHN TARRANT

A GROUP of volunteer fire fighters based in Rathcoole are laying down a challenge that for every euro generated in a fundraiser, they will remain on a bike in their NeverEndingCycle.

The event supports the Irish Community Rapid Response Air Ambulance and their aeromedical service based at Rathcoole. Since its launch, the AW109 Air Ambulance helicopter

has been on consistent demand, within 40 minutes flying distance of a large swathe of the south of the country from Galway to Wexford

Volunteer Fire Fighter Alan Murphy from Millstreet spoke of the benefits of the Air Ambulance in getting emergency cases from inaccessible locations to hospitals.

“Time is the biggest priority when it comes to serious emergencies in the medical sphere. As volunteer firefighters for ICRR we have been blown away by the support shown to the charity that holds dear to our hearts”, he said.

“A few weeks in lockdown have taken its toll so in order to counter the effects of the lockdown and get some badly needed exercise we’ve decided to take to the roads and the physical challenge of cycling 5km loops around ICRR HQ at Rathcoole”, said Alan.

The organisers express thanks to clubs, groups and the public on supporting the Air Ambulance all over the country. From the latest venture, every €1 donated will keep the cyclists in the saddle for one minute, €60 will equate to 1hr and €600 matches up to 10hrs.

“Any small donation will make a big difference, help get our fireman fit again, keep the helicopter in the air where it belongs and provide no end of amusements to the residents of Rathcoole in our excursions on the bikes”, say the volunteers.
