Charity shop issues appeal after find of valuable piece of jewellery

- CONCUBHAR Ó LIATHÁIN

THE team at Macroom’s National Council for the Blind in Ireland charity shop have launched a public appeal looking for someone who donated a jewellery box to the shop on the town’s Main Street.

An item within the jewellery box was found, and they believe the donor was not aware it was within this box.

Mary Cowley, speaking to Patricia Messinger on C103’s Cork Today show, explained how they found the item of jewellery before the box in which it was hidden caught the eye of a customer.

“What’s happening at the minute, because of COVID, anytime a donation comes, we have an area where we ask the customer to pop [in] the stuff because we have to glove up and bag it and leave it for 72 hours before we can touch it.”

Mary has a recollection of a lady coming in and saying she was leaving the jewellery box.

A few hours later, she was in the back, processing the different items, doing some sanitising and the like. She had emptied the box of some items of custom jewellery, but she could hear another item rattling around the back of the box.

Now Mary and her colleagues want to ensure that the piece of jewellery, which they believe to be valuable, gets back into the hands of its owner.

The appeal has been issued on the shop’s Facebook page and the owner can contact the shop to make an arrangement to collect the possibly valuable item.
