Frustration at bus depot snub of council

- CONCUBHAR Ó LIATHÁIN

IF the bus depot in Macroom was in private hands, it would have been taken over by the council a long time ago and the owner would be in court, such is its dilapidation.

That was the reaction of Macroom councillor Ted Lucey as he spoke at Monday’s meeting of the Municipal District Council following confirmation by Marie O’Leary, the Municipal District Officer, that no response had been received from the transport company to the council’s enquiries about the site.

“It’s the only bus depot in Macroom and it’s a disgrace, it’s falling down,” said Councillor Lucey, who urged a further attempt to communicate with Bus Éireann.

At meetings earlier this year the matter was raised in the context of the council taking possession of the site under provisions of derelict site legislation.

Cllr Michael Looney said he was ‘ nearly ashamed to tell tourists where it was’.

And his party colleague, Cllr Gobnait Moynihan, said that an emphasis should be put on the health and safety status of the site in future communications with Bus Éireann.

It was resolved by the councillors that yet another attempt would be made to engage with Bus Éireann to make it aware of councillors’ concerns.
