Great sadness on death of Canon Tim O’Leary
THERE was a great sense of shock and sadness in Mitchelstown on Sunday evening when news broke through of the death of Canon Tim O’Leary.
In his 88th year his death was unexpected and took place at his home.
Very Rev Canon Tim CC, P E was retired Parish Priest for the past nine years. He resided at New Square, Mitchelstown and was formerly of Nadrid, Coachford.
He was ordained in June 1958 and initially served in Wales and later in Kilcorney, Ballymacoda and Fermoy for 14 years. In 1993 after being administrator in Fermoy for a number years he was appointed Parish Priest in Mitchelstown on the retirement of the late Canon Patrick Sheehan.
A few years after his appointment to Mitchelstown he was promoted to Canon. He spent the past 26 years in the parish of Mitchelstown where he was very well liked by all. He served the people of the parish very well. He was courteous, gentle and well spoken. He had many talents and interests.
He was big into electrical works and computers. He loved wildlife and gardening and had a big interst in all sports.
The late Canon Tim concelebrated the 8.30am Mass on Sunday morning along with Fr. Pat O’Donoghue. Canon Tim reposed at the Chapel of Rest Baldwin St. on Tuesday where many people called and paid their respects. In accordance with Covid 19 and HSE regulations his family were not present.
On Wednesday the funeral cortege left the Chapel of Rest via Baldwin St. Main St. Church St. Georges St. King St. New Square via his residence on its way to the Parish Church for his Requiem Mass. Interment took place in the Church Yard Grounds. To his sister Joan (Cahill) nieces, nephews, relatives, his fellow priests, Canon Michael Leamy PP, Fr Pat O’Donoghue CC, his devoted housekeeper Veronica McAuliffe, his helpers Sr Anne Sheehy, Catherine McGrath, Bishops William Crean, John Magee, priests and religious in the Cloyne and surrounding Dioceses, his present and former parishioners and many friends we tender our sincere sympathy.
