WORKS in Mitchelstown will be included under works contracted for the Fermoy Municipal District Footpath Project, Cork County Council has revealed.

The works, which have been contracted to Linehan Civil Engineering Ltd, are planned between July and October at various locations in the Fermoy Municipal District and will form part of Project ACT supporting the reactivation of Cork County.

The contract, valued at almost €200,000, includes the construction of new pedestrian crossings and new footpaths, as well as renovations and repairs to existing footpaths.

As part of the project, two new age-friendly zebra crossings are to be installed on Upper and Lower Cork Street in Mitchelstown, in line with the Cork County Council’s Age Friendly programme and their recently launched CARE. (Consider, Assist, Respect, Empathise) guidelines.

These were developed to ensure that public spaces are as safe as possible for older and vulnerable people as our towns and villages reopen.

Mayor of the County of Cork Cllr Mary Linehan Foley welcomed the news saying: “Mitchelstown is already well established as an age-friendly town, and the addition of these zebra crossings will go hand in hand with other plans to enhance the town, giving the people of Mitchelstown and its visitors a welcoming and safe experience.

“Fermoy Municipal District is home to many beautiful towns and villages, and these improvement works will ensure that they remain great places to live, work and visit.”

Cork County Council Chief Executive Tim Lucey also acknowledged the good news for Mitchelstown.

“We are delighted to press ahead with the Fermoy Municipal District Footpath Project, which complements the work of Project ACT, supporting our towns and villages are they reopen,” Mr Lucey said.

“Combined with the recently confirmed Rural Regeneration and Development funding for Mitchelstown, this investment represents a great leap forward for this region,” the Chief Executive added.
