HIS HOLINESS Pope Francis has appointed the Reverend Monsignor Michael F Crotty – a priest of the Diocese of Cloyne and a native of Skeheen, Mitchelstown – as the Apostolic Nuncio to Burkina Faso, elevating him to the dignity of Archbishop and also appointing him to the titular see of Lindisfarne.

The Episcopal Ordination was due to take place in Rome a few months ago, but was then postponed due to the outbreak of COVID-19.

It will now take place instead in the Cathedral in Cobh on August 15.

Monsignor Crotty has been serving in the diplomatic services of the Holy See since 2001, at which time he started out as Apostolic Nunciature in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. He was also Deputy Head of Mission of the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See to UNEP (United Nations Environemental Programme) and UN –HABITAT (United Nations Human Settlements Programme).

From 2004 to 2007, he served as First Secretary of the Apostolic Nunciature in the Canadian capital, Ottawa; and from 2007 to 2009, he was First Secretary of the Apostolic Nunciatures in the Iraqi capital, Bagdhad, and Jordanian capital Amman.

Thereafter, from 2009 to 2017, he was official of the Section for Relations with States of the Secretariat of State in the Vatican.

His most recent role, in which he had served since 2017, was as First Counsellor of the Apostolic

Nunciature in Spain.

Only a limited number of people will be able to attend the Ordination Ceremony on August 15, although the ceremony will be live streamed through web-cam.
