CILLNA MARTRA
MASSESBACK
Both Pobal Réidjh na nDoirí and Pobal Chill na Martra are delighted to have Sunday Masses back, although with adaptations due to Covid guidelines.
Séipéal Lachtaín Naofa can accommodate fifty parishioners while Séipéal Réidh na nDoirí can hold thirty. Our Parish Council has done amazing work preparing our Churches and it helped enormously to keep everyone safe from the moment of arrival to departure. Receiving Holy Communion probably caused most concern but masked Ministers of the Eucharist moved through the Church, ending all anxieties.
We are truly indebted to our stewards, Ministers and all volunteers. Weekday Masses on Monday and Friday mornings have resumed from Monday, July 13th at 9am.

WORLDRANKING
We have All Ireland champions in our Parish from time to time, but when boxer Cristín Ni Dheasúna was ranked ninth in the World in the new IABA World rankings recently, Cill na Martra’s pride grew and grew. It is a measure of her success, although it is her first year fighting at welterweight level. Míle comhghairdeas Cristín.
CILL NAMARTRA ROADS
We are known to complain about our roads frequently, but famous Car Rally drivers list some of our as their favourites. The famous Sebastion Loeb in 2007 lists Cill na Martra roads as one of his favourite stages as he competed in the Cork 20 International Rally.
Another well known Rally driver, Daniel Cronin, Ballylickey also selected some of our roads as his favourites as he seems to make good times on them. He feels good when he is airborne and he called it a rollercoaster ride.
FAMINE IN MUSKERRY
The following is an extract taken from the Máire Mac Suibhne=92s book on Famine In Muskerry. Chapter Five deals with the devastation in Baile Bhuirne and Cill na
Martra.
Kilnamartery, as it is termed by Griffiths, suffered huge losses with the 1841 figure of 2,782 in 449 houses falling to 1,805 in 325 houses ten years later. The Kilnamartery townlands most seriously affected were Cloncud, Coolcam, Cools, Gortanaddan and Knockroe. Cloncluds population was reduced from 129 in 1841 to a mere 23 in 1851 with only 6 of its 24 houses still occupied.
Coolcam lost 12 of its 20 original households and only 24 remained of the 119 occupants. The population of Cools was reduced from 67 to 28; Gortanaddan from 38 to 16 and Knockroe lost 19 of its 29 households and only 58 residents remained of the 1841 population of 171.
A Cork Examiner reporter described the terrain as wild and irreclaimable in appearance. The soil is poor and unproductive. The farmers grow potatoes only for the ordinary uses of their families and not for the market.
Their wheat and oat crops, even in favourable years, are stunted and unbounteous.
