St Peters and Robert Emmets square up as U-21 football championship resumes
THE Duhallow playing season resumes with a quarter final to the Central Stores, Kanturk Duhallow U-21 ‘B’ FC on the meeting of St. Peters and Robert Emmets in Boherbue on this Friday evening.
It has been a roller coaster campaign for St. Peters, within touching distance of overcoming holders Duarigle Gaels in the opening round only to be defeated by a single point in extra time.
Clearly the Rockchapel and Freemount combination learned a lesson from that opening hurdle defeat when St Peters overcame Knocknagree in round 2. On this occasion, victory was well deserved for St. Peters, producing the energy and purpose in addition to coping much better with the poor weather conditions.
Driven on by the efforts of Cathal Broderick, Martin Murphy, Michael O’Callaghan and Jack Curtin, St Peters saw Mike McAulliffe emerge the more accomplished performer to regularly trouble the Knocknagree rearguard that climaxed with an all important goal.
Robert Emmets enter the contest without a competitive game and that maybe somewhat of a setback. They can call on the services of Josh O’Keeffe, Cathal Browne, David Cottrell, brothers Mikey and Paddy Browne, all players capable of inspiring confidence. Last season Emmets operated at C level, reaching a county final only to come up short to Aghinagh.
Known form is unknown owing to the virus but St. Peters playing in their third game might be good enough to secure a semi final meeting against Boherbue.
Defending holders Duarigle Gaels square up to Sliabh Luachra Gaels in a semi final on Saturday. The champions were made to work by challengers St. Peters in the opening round, ultimately, Duarigle were forced to up their level of performance during the second half that allowed helped force extra time and shade matters.
As the contest aged, Duarigle got to grips with the situation, prompted by the play of Colin Walsh, Shane Hickey, Darragh Cashman, Niall Flahive and Colm O’Leary.
Sliabh Luachra Gaels left it late before seeing off the challenge of Knocknagree

SUNDAY, JULY 26 in a titanic opening round. From one of those evenly balanced battles that could had gone either way but at the end of the extended hour, the tenacity of the Ballydesmond and Kiskeam combination shone though they relied on a late converted free by Thomas Casey to swing a delicately balanced contest.
As both outfits operated with ferocious intensity, Sliabh Luachra worked hard to retain the initiative through the convincing play of Jack O’Connor, Jack Daly, Seán Meehan and Maurice Casey that proved key to the destination of the spoils.
With the formbook from last February and early March gone out the window, the battle of the Gaels promises to be competitive where economy upfront maybe a deciding factor.
