Work to start on replacing faulty Kilbrin water pipes

- BILL BROWNE

THERE was finally some good new for long suffering residents in the Kilbrin area after it emerged Irish Water is to carry out long awaited repairs to their water supply scheme.

It had been feared that a project to replace dilapidated water-mains, which had left many locals without a reliable water supply for years, had been mothballed due to a lack of funding.

However, it has now emerged that Irish Water is set to begin replacing more than 1km of water-mains in the Drominagore and Clonrobin areas of Kilbrin next week.

Welcoming the news Cllr John Paul O’Shea said it will come as a “welcome relief ” to local residents who he said have had to endure numerous disruptions to their supply for many years.

“The current infrastructure has clearly been no longer fit for purpose for some time now. While I’m delighted Irish Water has confirmed these works, 4km of mains piping needs to be replaced and I will continue to make representations to Irish Water to ensure this will happen,” said Cllr O’Shea.

He said it would make more financial sense for Irish Water to replace all the faulty pipes in the area in one go rather that doing the job piecemeal.

“Cork County Council has acknowledged the dire situation in Kilbrin. It would be far more cost effective to move ahead and proceed with the full replacement of the 4km of water-mains in the area instead of continuing to incur such expenditure in repairing already outdated and debilitating pipes,” said Cllr O’Shea.

“I want to say a particular word of thanks to the local water curator, plumbing staff and the entire water services team in Cork County Council who have worked closely with me and the local community during the last few months where undoubtedly, work on repairing and patching this debilitating network was no easy task,” he added.
