It’s high fives all around for Muskerry Special Olympians
MUSKERRY Special Olympic athletes had a fantastic day on Sunday as the athletes who signed up to a program titled ‘So Let’s Run’ during the lockdown showed off just how much they had improved.
‘So Let’s Run’ is at 12-week program improving athletes’ fitness, from being able to run/walk 100m to running or walking a 5k.
The club does all its training together but during lock-down this was not possible, so they had to rely on a sibling or parent of the athlete to do the training with the athlete. And the athletes were certainly up for the challenge as all the training over the last 12 weeks paid off – the day had come to put the training into practice and complete the 5k.
The club had to complete the 5k in a place that was safe for the athletes as they are vulnerable children and so they got kind permission to run the 5k in the beautiful and scenic Millstreet Country Park. The park and facilities were opened up for the club, there was loads of space for social distancing and the sun shone out, making it the perfect place for the athletes to complete their challenge.
The athletes in Muskerry Special Olympics Club, their parents and siblings, absolutely loved their day out and were treated to some well deserved tea and snacks afterwards.
It was a fantastic achievement for all the athletes to complete 5k. The lock-down was extremely hard on these athletes not being in their usual routine but they were all smiles yesterday when the club all met up for the first time since March.
A huge thank you to the volunteers from the West Muskerry Athletic Club who helped on the day and to the younger athletes, Devon and Isla Yore, Katelyn and Emily Cronin, Tristan, Rowan and Fern Mullane who all ran with the Special Olympic athletes and encouraged them all the way around.
The club has also thanked all who set up the course, stewards for guiding all the athletes, their parents and siblings and the Special Olympic Volunteers safely around the 5k route.
