Claragh Loop challenge for Rebel Rambles walkers

-

ACCORDING to hillwalking veteran Pádraig Breen, if you want to know if you’re fit enough to join a hillwalking club, take on Claragh near Millstreet as an initial test.

The 452m high mountain overlooking Millstreet is in the sights of participant’s in this year’s Rebel Ramble which talkes place this Sunday, September 27, and is organised by Cork Sports Partnership.

To counter COVID, a staggered start to the 10km walk has been proposed by the organisers.

Walkers will first ascent Claragh Mountain and then complete the full loop.

They can expect to enjoy stunning views over north Cork and the Paps and McGillycuddy Reeks can be seen to the west.

“It’s ideal for starting hillwalking or restarting it - it’s a bit of climb to the cross on top of Claragh but it’s not too steep,” said Padraig Breen, a veteran walker himself.

The Rebel Ramble, which is organised by the Cork Sports Partnership, has as its aim the

promotion of walking, hiking and hill walking as a recreational activity and the benefits of keeping fit.

According to the organisers, the Claragh Loop is a walk that will suit everyone from those who are interested in taking up hiking and hill walking, to those who want to try a family day out with a difference, to those who just want to go for a stroll.

The Ramble will also suit the more serious hill walker or runner who needs a good training workout.
