Killavullen minors have good win but still miss out on final spot
Killavullen 0-23 Ballycastle Gaels 0-14
THIS was a very keenly contested Rebel Og MAHC concluding game at Ballyhooly last Wednesday. Gaels were already out of the contention with Killavullen assured a place in the final if Fermoy had defeated Charleville the same evening. Charleville won out and Killavullen were then out of the final.
Killavullen winners led all through this game, dominating the half back line and midfield sectors. Early points by Shane Walsh, Mark Nagle, Michael Cagney and Eoin O’Hanlon had them 0-4 ahead after 8 minutes. Further pressure saw Killavullen add 3 points in succession by Colm Looney as they moved 0-7 ahead after 12 minutes. Gaels battled hard. They had a point by Aidan O’Leary. Eoin Birchill replied for the winners from long range. Dan Roche pointed a Gaels free just before the water break 0-8 to 0-2.
On the restart Dan Roche followed with a fine point. Killavullen had two wides before Jamie Magnier made it 0-9 to 0-3. Dan Roche was Gaels main scorer and he kept his side in touch. Mark Burdett pointed for the Ballyhooly/Castletownroche side. Jamie Magnier with points for the winners from play and a free made it 0-11 to 0-6. Michael Cagney and Darragh O’Grady continued to do well at midfield for the winners. By half time Killavullen led 0-13 to 0-8.
On the resumption Gaels came very strong. Fionn Hess, Dan Roche and Darragh Whelan had points as they came within 3 points 0-14 to 0-11. Killavullen did well from here on they added points by Jamie Magnier, Darragh O’Grady and Colm Looney 0-17 to 0-11. Gearoid Roche and Dan Roche
had a point each 0-18 to 0-13 by the second water break.
The winners who felt they were in with a chance of a final place played out the final quarter in style. They had five points in this period by Michael Cagney and Fionn Magnier (4) while Dan Roche completed the scoring with a late
pointed free.
