Kanturk continue to fly high with nine point victory over well regarded Aghada

Kanturk 0-17 Aghada 0-8

NOT for the first time it has to be said, Kanturk are flying high in both football and hurling after the former code joined the latter in their respective championship semi-finals last weekend.

The club’s senior hurlers had already booked their spot in the SAHC semis the week before and last Saturday the footballers followed suit with a comprehensive dismissal of Aghada in Ovens.

The Duhallow men have got better game on game and that culminated in a pretty impressive 60+ minutes of football last weekend from a squad that must surely now be dreaming of life as a senior side.

Players of the quality of captain John McLoughlin Cian Clernon, Paul Walsh and Kyrle Holland were in top form against Aghada with Cork hurler Aidan Walsh also on site to put his talents to the test.

Former Cork hurler, Lorcan McLoughlin was another dual star that is more than capable with the big ball while Ian Walsh was another well worthy of his place in a team that have just three players not involved in both codes.

For Aghada, former Cork star Pearse O’Neill was a colossus all game with Michael Russell another to do well on a day that never really looked like being their day.

Kanturk were quickest to get going and led by 0-6 to 0-2 by the water break.

Aghada fought back to keep pace with the north Cork men however they couldn’t get close enough to cause damage and remained four back as the sides broke for the half time interval. 0-8 to 0-4

Aghada needed a quick start if they were to drag themselves back to within striking distance but it was the Duhallow boys that settled quicker once more with six of the next seven points to push well clear – nine points by the second water break.

Credit to Aghada for steadying the ship late on as the teams shared the last half dozen scores but this one was well done by that stage as Kanturk cruised to a full-deserved victory.

The win sees Kanturk booked to take on title favourites Cill na

Martra for a place in the showpiece game and while the test is substantial – few would bet against the Duhallow side going all the way.
