Magical moments through the camera lens brought into focus
CLUB CO-FOUNDER, AND STALWART, THE LATE JOHN DOHENY, REMEMBERED THROUGH A PERPETUAL TROPHY IN HIS NAME
WHILE 2020 was, by any stretch of the imagination a strange year, it did not stop members of Mallow Camera Club capturing some magical memories through the camera lens.
That was very much evident through the high standard of entries to the club’s Image of the Year competition, the results of which were recently announced by the organising committee over Zoom.
The competition attracted 33 entries,
with each entrant submitting one colour and one mono image across four grades, which were judged online by a trio of expert judges.
They were Helen Hanafin, a member of Dublin Camera Club and an Irish Photographic Federation (IPF) approved judge; multi-award winning Cork-based fine art photographer and educator Mike Brown and author/photographer David Gibbins of the Beeston Camera Club in Nottinghamshire.
Camera Club PRO Jim McSweeney said that the panel were given a tough job.
“There was some very close scoring they had to deliberate on a number of ties, including on the overall Image of the Year. Helen, Mike and David put in an excellent effort, especially in providing feedback on every image with positive observations and constructive
suggestions for improvement where appropriate, and we hugely appreciate their contribution,” said Jim.
The Mono Image of the Year award and first place in Grade 4 was awarded to Neil O’Mullane for ‘Fair Head & Beara’.
Justyna Trzesicka LIPF put in an outstanding performance, winning the Colour Image of the Year for ‘Artemis’, the colour Grade 4 category and came third in the Grade 4 mono section.
‘Artemis’ also won Justyna the inaugural John Doheny Perpetual Trophy for Overall Image of the Year.
This was introduced to honour the memory of John Doheny, a much-respected colleague and one of the club’s founder members, who sadly passed away last year. His wife, Geraldine, and son, Declan, joined in on Zoom for the awards night.
“Club chair summed up the sentiments of all when he said the John Doheny Perpetual Trophy demonstrated the high regard club members have for John. He will be forever remembered as a kind, generous and helpful colleague,” said Jim McSweeney.
“As a huge ‘ thank you’ Lisa Egan and Neil O’Mullane, for setting up and running the competition, to all the entrants and congratulations to the winners.”
Mallow Camera Club boasts more than 60 members and continues to flourish in line with Covid restrictions, holding weekly, regular competitions, guest speakers, photography workshops all conducted over Zoom.
