The shamrocks are up for St Patrick’s Day

VIRTUAL CELEBRATION TO STAR LOCAL FRONTLINE WORKERS

- CONCUBHAR Ó LIATHÁIN

MACROOM will have to go one more St Patrick’s Day without the town’s famous celebration but, fear not, the town will be marking our patron saint’s feast day with a series of virtual events which will be long remembered.

Already the festive shamrocks are up in place of the recently removed Christmas lights.

Rehearsals - with social distancing - have been taking place with frontline workers from the local hospital, all Macroom’s supermarkets, Dunnes, Aldi, Lidl and Supervalu, the council, the Sullane Family Practice - all in their respective bubbles.

According to Cllr Eileen Lynch, the celebration they’re planning has been inspired by the Jerusalema Challenge sweeping the globe but they’re planning to put a new twist on that routine as they reinvent St Patrick’s Day for the time of lockdown.

“2020 and 2021 have been tough on us all, but we have truly seen the best of our communities and frontline services during this time,” she said. Cllr Lynch is part of a group which also includes local stalwarts Jerry Murphy, Ann O’Connell, Deirdre O’Sullivan and the Lee Valley Enterprise Board, which has always been involved in past St Patrick’s Day celebrations, has also come on board.

Cllr Lynch advised people to keep an eye on a soon to be launched Facebook page which will be the venue for a build up of excitement before the events planned for the feast day itself.

“Our Facebook page - Macroom St Patrick’s Day Virtual Celebration 2021 - will be launched on March 10 and throughout the lead up to St Patrick’s Day we’ll be keeping you posted with memories of St Patrick’s Day celebrations and messages from our friends far and wide.

“On St Patrick’s Day at 10am, we will be releasing our virtual celebration, a video celebration of our town and our people.

“We were inspired by the recent dance challenges across the country and decided to create our own. Our video will tell a St Patrick’s Day story and celebrate the frontline workers in our town who have risked their lives to help us all these past twelve months.”

There’s an open invitation to those who have relatives or friends abroad who might like to share a message on the Facebook page to get involved by sending an email to macroomdancechallenge@gmail.com.
