Catherine’s cookery book is selling like .... well ... hot cakes!

-

SOME headlines write themselves and, as this is a story about a local woman who turned a love of baking inherited from her mother into a cookery book which has generated thousands of Euro for local charity, the above headline is fitting.

Catherine Ross Murphy has taken the lessons she was taught in school and at her mother’s side in the kitchen and distilled that knowledge and experience to produce Catherine’s Old Time Cookbook, which has been selling very well in local shops around Macroom and its hinterland.

Catherine has happy memories of her childhood in Dunmanway where she grew up.

“I owe my Mum so much as I loved watching her in the kitchen baking, throwing a fist of this and a fist of that into a bowl

“The milk would be left go sour in a gallon on the back kitchen table.

“These were lovely childhood memories from one terrific Mum.”

So far sales of the cookery book have generated sizable donations of dough for local charities. St Vincent de Paul has benefitted to the tune of almost €5,000, which has received half of the proceeds with the other half being distributed among other local charities.

Catherine did most of the work herself though the cover of the book was designed professionally. Her daughter, Natalie, was a huge help to Catherine as her knowledge with computers helped her mother immeasureably.

“I’m delighted with sales, I have more covers on order and hope, when lockdown is over, to move books for sale into Killarney and the Ballincollig areas.”
