Historic congresssees GAA seasons split

-

AN historic, on many levels, GAA congress at national level took place on Saturday last.

Historic in that it was a virtual event, historic due to the first North American GAA Board representative taking up the reigns of president of the GAA, even though Larry McCarthy is steeped with Cork connections, being a former Bishopstown GAA player prior to moving state side in 1985. Historic also with the passing of the motion to have the split season of Inter-county followed by the club season enshrined into rule from 2022.

While the split season was introduced due to the Covid lockdown of last year, and a similar route might follow for 2021, is it wise for the GAA to go down the path that is being taken in 2022 and beyond? The concept of giving certainty to club players in the scheduling of games is at the heart of the matter. Yet, at the stroke of a pen, the summer months of May, June and July will be lost on the championship scene to the club player, and completing league programmes will be the order of the day.

In effect, the GAA are telling the club player it’s fine for you to play your most important championships from August into the long winter nights on heavy underfoot conditions into October and November. Is this a wise move to help promote the grassroots of the GAA in which the inter-county player of tomorrow is developed?

I wonder should the GAA nationally trial a split season of National League in spring, club championships in the main summer months followed by inter-county championships from September on inter-county grounds which can take the games on top class fields? Food for thought, I presume.
