Dromtariffe Golf Society comes of age

- BY JOHN TARRANT

Little did the founding group in the early noughties envisage at that stage that not only would the Dromtariffe GAA Golf Society come to fruition but that, 21 years on, it would still be going strong and providing camaraderie and friendships to so many gaels.

From little seeds do acorns grow and the Dromtariffe Golf Society is a fine example on marking its 21st anniversary at an outing in Kanturk last weekend.

Credit for mooting the founding of the Dromtariffe society back in 2003 goes to Vincent Angland. Subsequently, an enthusiastic group convened to an initial meeting and the rest, as they say, is history, and as a token of appreciation, a presentation was made to Vincent.

The society, whose philosophy is enjoying golf and maintaining great friendship, is currently headed by captain John O’Sullivan; President, Derry Kiely; Secretary Kieran O’Flynn; Treasurer, D C O’Sullivan and Committee members Denis Murphy and Michael O’Connell.`

“We host a number of outings during the year, the Society is open to all connected with Dromtariffe. There are more than 60 members, some return to their native area and enjoy renewing acquaintances”, said Committee member Michael O’Connell.

The occasion in Kanturk remembered Seán Feely, the holder of several positions within the club and Golf Society, whose untimely death caused widespread regret last autumn.

“His passing caused great regret, his spell at the helm coincided with a great era for Dromtariffe GAA, in both hurling and football in addition to being a key figure in the advancement of the Dromtariffe Golf Society”, said Michael.

Members of the Feely family attended the presentation prize ceremony, where speakers acknowledged Seán’s contribution to Dromtariffe GAA and Golf Society.

Taking first place in the outing were a quartet of Con O’Callaghan, John O’Leary, Niall O’Sullivan and Michael O’Keeffe. Runner up place was filled by Conor Cremin, Evan Murphy, Tony McAulliffe and David Angland with third position awarded to John Piggott, Tim Cremin, Aine Howard and Kevin McSweeney.
