Jacklin’s Ryder Cup rebuke
TONY JACKLIN, the four-time Ryder Cup captain, has risked upsetting the man who succeeded him, Bernard Gallacher, by saying the Scot’s nephew is too ‘iffy’ to make the European side.
Stephen Gallacher has shot into contention for a spot on the team at Gleneagles after three European Tour wins this year.
But Jacklin, who led Europe to victories in 1983 and 1985, said: ‘Stephen looks a bit iffy sometimes, as if he’s not sure.
‘He’s a bit tender-minded maybe. You’ve got to have that mental toughness.’
Gallacher went into the PGA Championship at Wentworth 14th on the points list.
European trio Jonas Blixt, Victor Dubuisson and Joost Luiten have caught Jacklin’s eye.
‘Blixt impresses me,’ he said. He is a determined individual. I saw Dubuisson against Jason Day in the WGC Match Play final. Clearly the kid’s got talent.
‘We are probably going to have Luiten as well. He’s pretty consistent week in, week out.’
