Rory tees up Irish castle wedding
RORY McIlroy is on course to marry in Ireland, the Irish Mail on Sunday can reveal.
The world number three golfer has settled on Ashford Castle in Co. Mayo as the venue for his wedding to fiancée, Erica Stoll.
Sources have told the Irish Mail on Sunday that, despite having his choice of exotic locations around the world, the couple ‘really fell in love’ with Ashford Castle.
Although the date is unknown, the wedding could take place on New Year’s Eve as that is the next big gap in Rory’s golfing schedule.
Rory and Erica are frequent visitors to Ashford and have spent New Year’s Eve at the five-star Castle for the past two years.
In fact, it was in 2014 that they were first pictured together during a stay at the resort.
The couple, who had been dating for just a few months, flew into Ireland for the festive period. After a few days in Dublin’s Westbury Hotel they then went to Mayo where they quietly rang in the New Year.
They also took a helicopter ride around the county and did some sightseeing during their stay.
Rory and Erica then returned to Ashford last New Year’s Eve, just weeks after he proposed to Erica during a romantic trip to Paris.
The newly engaged couple posted a picture of themselves enjoying champagne just before midnight.
Rory had popped the question overlooking the Eiffel Tower when he whisked Erica off to the French capital in December.
The news of his impending nuptials will not be welcomed by his exfiancée Caroline Wozniacki.
In 2013 Rory called off his wedding to the Danish tennis star just after the invitations had gone out, saying he was not ready for marriage.
