SUPERMODEL Gisele Bündchen is coming out of retirement to launch the Rio Olympics as the embodiment of the sexy Girl From Ipanema, the Irish Mail on Sunday can reveal.

Stunning Gisele, 35, who quit the catwalk last year, will be one of many ‘surprises’ planned for the ‘sexiest ever’ Olympic opening ceremony on August 5, which is expected to attract a global TV audience of a billion people.

She will strut into Rio’s Maracana stadium to the strains of the famous bossa nova jazz song which will be played on a piano by Brazilian musician Paolo Jobim, whose late father Antonio composed the worldwide hit in 1962.

Details of the show have been kept secret, but insiders say it will feature 6,000 scantily-clad performers and that the theme will be ‘the evolution of the people of Brazil’, featuring tributes to Brazil’s Carnival and the country’s love of sensual dance and the female form.

Brazilian footballer Pele is tipped to light the Olympic flame at the show.

‘There will be lots of nearly-naked women doing the samba,’ one source said. ‘The outfits have been designed to show off as much flesh as possible. This is Brazil, after all, where the female body is celebrated like no other place.’

But with just 13 days to go, a series of crises is threatening the Games.

They include the possible ban of ALL Russian athletes over a doping scandal; a crime wave at the Olympic Village; terror threats and the Zika virus.

Ireland will send the largest number of athletes it has sent to an Olympics since 1948 – a total of 77, and 26 of them are women.

As the first Irish athletes arrived in Brazil, there have been reports of a spate of robberies at the Olympic Village that will house 17,000 athletes including the Irish medal favourites Michael Conlan and Katie Taylor.

‘Practically every type of item that could fit in a bag was taken – light fittings, lamps, mirrors, even toilet seats,’ one report said.

Meanwhile, athletes are being warned that sexual promiscuity in the Village could fuel the spread of the deadly Zika virus. Organisers will provide a record 450,000 free condoms as a precaution.
