THE KEY PLAYERS IN THE DU PLANTIER STORY

-

IAN BAILEY

The English journalist was arrested twice in relation to Sophie Toscan du Plantier’s death in December 1996 – but was never charged. He has always protested his innocence but is now wanted by the French authorities who wish to try him for her murder.

JULES THOMAS

Ian Bailey’s long-term partner was arrested on suspicion of ‘covering’ for Mr Bailey – first in 1997 and again in 2000. Welsh-born Ms Thomas, who Bailey admits having assaulted in the past, claims that she was roughly treated by gardaí.

JIM FITZGERALD

The detective went to the du Plantier murder scene with Det. Sgt Maurice Walsh and Garda Liam Leahy. Mr Bailey has claimed they wrongly implicated him in the murder. Marie Farrell claimed during Mr Bailey’s civil case that Det. Fitzgerald asked her for sex.

MARIE FARRELL

The Schull shopkeeper told gardaí that she had seen Ian Bailey at Kealfadda Bridge on the night of the murder. She later claimed that gardaí had coerced her into falsely identifying him – a claim rejected by a jury during Mr Bailey’s civil case last year.

MARTIN GRAHAM

An ex-British soldier who moved to Cork, Graham claimed gardaí gave him cash, clothes and significant quantities of cannabis as part of a plan for him to befriend Ian Bailey in order to secure evidence to incriminate Bailey. The gardaí deny the claim.

PIERRE LOUIS BAUDEY-VIGNAUD

Sophie’s son was 15 when his mother was brutally murdered. He stayed in the Cork holiday home last week and spoke about how important it is to his family that his mother’s killer is brought to justice.
