Guardiola full of praise for Celtic boss Rodgers

- By Graeme Croser

MANCHESTER CITY boss Pep Guardiola has spoken of his respect for Brendan Rodgers ahead of his forthcoming Champions League meeting with the Celtic manager.

Guardiola’s name may forever be synonymous with Barcelona but while his return to the Nou Camp may be the most eagerly anticipated date in this season’s group stage calendar, he is first looking forward to taking his new team over the Scottish border to Glasgow.

An admirer of the work Rodgers did at Liverpool, he cites the 2013-14 English Premier League season as reason to take the Scottish champions seriously when the clubs clash on September 28.

‘I don’t think there is any doubt about Brendan’s quality,’ said Guardiola.

‘He has a lot of experience and he was closer than anyone in the last 25 years to winning the Premier League at Liverpool. ‘Brendan has started well in the Scottish league and he made his first step by qualifying for the Champions League.’

City have made a solid start to the season under Guardiola and, just as he’s enjoying the novelty of testing himself in the English arena, the former Bayern Munich boss is looking forward to visiting Celtic Park next month.

‘This is the first time I will go to Glasgow to play,’ he continued.

‘I am so excited to play in their stadium.’
