The only pressure to be slim comes from myself

Miss Ireland reveals healthy attitude after Trump row

- By Niamh Walsh

BEAUTY contests have been in the news in recent weeks over Donald Trump’s ‘fat shaming’ of a former Miss Universe.

But that story doesn’t bother new Miss Ireland Niamh Kennedy, who is fired up to compete for the Miss World title at the finals in Washington in December. And although Niamh is working hard to stay in tiptop shape, she says the only pressure she feels comes from herself. Mr Trump described 1996 Venezuelan Miss Universe winner Alicia Machado, left, as ‘Miss Piggy’ after she gained weight following her victory.

But according to Niamh, who is from Tipperary, the reality today is very different.

Speaking to the Irish Mail on Sunday after a gym session with a personal trainer provided by the pageant organisers, Niamh, 20, said she was seeing the trainer three times a week.

‘Personally, I don’t feel pressure,’ said Niamh. ‘I am very comfortable in my own skin. As long as you’re healthy and do enough exercise to keep yourself healthy.

‘It’s hard enough growing up as a teenager without all that pressure.’

She points out that the ideal images of many celebrities that are presented on social media are often heavily edited.

‘You only see one side of celebrities when they post pictures. You don’t see them pigging out on Chinese food at the weekend.’

Niamh is training with Dan Ryan of Titan Fit in Kildare.

Niamh is a classically trained ballerina, although she admits that she hasn’t danced for a few years now. Her day job is working as a waitress.
