Travel TREATS

ENJOY A GREEN DAY:

I had occasion to head North last week for a game of golf. A bunch of us nuts were invited to play the course on which the Irish Open will be staged in a few weeks’ time, Portstewart GC. It was my second time to play it and I can’t wait to get back – a sensational links course which seems to attract good weather whenever I arrive! As if that wasn’t enough, we stayed at Galgorm Resort and Spa. Home to the unique Thermal Village and Spa, it’s comfort at its best. The food both morning and night was delicious, and was the perfect preparation for near-perfect golf. I say near-perfect as we were beaten by a renegade crew of Northern cowboys aided by a traitor from Meath. A prolonged visit to the expansive gin bar may have dulled the early shots but it was well worth it. More on all of the above (apart from the cowboys!) at discovernorthernireland.com.

KING OF THE CASTLES:

I was always very impressed by Dromoland Castle whenever I was in the southwest. Now they tell me that they’re investing €20million in a renovation project. It’s a five-star facility that’s about to become even better. For more information and prices, check out dromoland.ie.

CUBAN MIDLIFE CRISIS:

You know you’re shoving on when your children are going to places you’ve never visited and own cars you’ve never driven. So it is with me at the moment as two of my daughters are planning a trip to Cuba, while another drives a BMW! If you had Cuba on your family bucket list, then you could fly off, two adults and two children, for about €5,800 including flights, hotels, etc. See cubatravel.ie.

GO HERE FOR THE BEER:

Killarney is a place I’ve always liked. It’s a fair oul’ trek but I’ve always found it worth the effort. I hope the year doesn’t pass without another trip. If you’re into beer, especially of the craft variety, you should book into the Gleneagle for the Killarney Beerfest – your thirst and tastebuds will be well looked after.
